Peace House could not be more impressed by the success of the growing Rogue Liberation Library. On a shoestring budget, volunteers with the program procure, package and mail at least 50 parcels (150 books) to incarcerated people each week.
Books play a critical role in the lives of the incarcerated. The packages people receive filled with reading materials provide a lifeline of support, education, and inspiration for those isolated while in prison. Since individuals are unable to send books directly to their loved ones, programs like Rogue Liberation Library help fill the gaps.
The more than 600 books sent to people in prison each month represents a threefold growth in the program, due in large part to the dedication and financial contributions from the all-volunteer team, composed mainly of retired librarians. Now they are asking for your help.
Postage remains a significant expense, with each package averaging more than $4.00. Several people have pledged $20.00 per month toward postage, and challenge others to match them. Of course, a single donation would be tremendously helpful, as any funds above basic postage allow the group to purchase books at a discounted rate.
Gently used or new paperbacks may be dropped of 24 hours a day, seven days a week at Peace House. Please review the Book Donation Guideline. Unfortunately, many titles are banned within prisons, and books that contain writing in the margins or don’t comply with other standards cannot be sent.
