Today Marks UN’s International Day of Peace

More than five thousand events between now and Oct 2 for Campaign of Nonviolence Action Days

Submitted by the Pace e Bene Team

Today marks the annual celebration of the United Nations International Day of Peace. It’s also the start of the Campaign Nonviolence Actions Days. From now until October 2, over 5,000 events will take place around the world for a culture of nonviolence free from war, racism, poverty, and environmental destruction.

Congratulations to those who are taking action today! And if you’re looking for an event to join, you can find an International Day of Peace event here.

Here’s how you can take action right now:

  • Cultivate a sense of peace within yourself today. Meditate. Walk. Pray. Listen to music. Reflect deeply on the possibility of a more nonviolent world.
  • Make a public declaration for peace (on social media or a local street corner).
  • Uplift Peace Day social posts with hashtags #IntlDayofPeace  #PeaceDay  #peace #peacenow
  • Show online solidarity with peace initiatives around the world.  For example:
    • Share these daily social posts on Peacemakers to Light the Path: reflections about the lives and wisdom of great nonviolence practitioners, one each day to inspire you, part of 12 Days Toward Peace from Drepung Gomang Center For Engaging Compassion.
    • Share social posts highlighting how students can make a big difference in ending mass shootings. Follow #StartWithHelloWeek (Sept 18-22) and share these posts.
  • Share and circulate #CNV2023 social posts, photos, and actions.
  • Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube.

Hundreds of actions and events are happening today. For example, an International Peace Day teach-in, peace march, and rally will take place in Opelika, Alabama; a Virtual Day of Prayer will be held by the Sisters of St. Francis, Clinton, Iowa and the Franciscan Peace Center; and Global Silent Minute will hold a silent meditation at 9pm GMT in 300 locations around the world.

Youth in Louisville, KY, will participate in an Engaging Nonviolence Symposium. Mission Mississippi in Jackson is holding a focused time of prayer to equip the next generation across racial lines to build peace. PeaceDayPhilly is using music and art to take action at City Hall. CODEPINK is rallying in Portland, OR, and demonstrators will protest imperialism, militarism, and carbon pollution at Beale Air Force Base in California. You can join and watch free films with the Global Peace Film Festival, attend a Kingian Nonviolence Training or come to the Listening Circle on Ukraine.
