Last Friday, more than 240 people gathered and volunteered at the Empty Bowls fundraiser, whose proceeds directly support feeding hungry people in Ashland. Just five minutes after the doors opened at 4:30, I witnessed a powerful circle of more than 100, who were ready to sit down to a simple meal of soup, bread, and cookies together. The friendly and familiar faces included esteemed elders, energetic youth, and vibrant community leaders that help shape policy for our region.
Joe Russell began playing piano music at 5 o’clock, as busy volunteers set up extra tables and chairs to accommodate the larger-than-usual crowd. Fresh cookies and bread continued to stream from the kitchen, as did a virtual plethora of soups, served by ‘celebrity servers,’ including OR Rep Pam Marsh, renowned artist Betty Laduke, Bob Kaplin, Judge Bloom, and many others. The evening was adorned with beautiful, handcrafted pottery donated by local artisans and hot, delicious soup prepared by chefs across the valley. Thank you everyone, for coming out to support Uncle Food’s, Ashland Food Angels, and the Peace Meals, who will benefit directly from your efforts.
The number of people, businesses, and organizations who donated to make the event possible is staggering!
