The Global Sumud Flotilla carrying humanitarian aid is docked at Tunis and will shortly depart for Gaza. The main convoy of 21 ships began in Barcelona on September 4th. On board are people from more than 44 countries, prompted by the intentional starvation of the Palestinians in Gaza. You can track its progress for yourself at globalsumudflotilla.org/tracker/
Tuesday, September 16th, at 6:30 p.m. South Mountain Friends Meeting (Quakers) and Peace House are gathering to witness the voyage of the flotilla at Peace House, 543 S. Mountain Ave. in Ashland. We’ll watch short videos sent from the ships and, if the flotilla has made contact with the Israeli blockade, any footage of what happened. The Global Sumud Flotilla has already faced multiple attacks, including a drone attack while docked at Tunis.
While we hope we will be watching footage of the flotilla’s successful arrival and distribution of aid in Gaza, anything is possible in the coming days. Past flotillas have been boarded illegally in international waters by Israeli forces, with their crews arrested and cargo confiscated. In 2010, when Israeli naval commanders from speedboats and helicopters boarded the Mavi Marmara, ten aid activists were killed and ten Israeli servicemen were wounded.
Come witness the bravery of the crews determined to bring necessary aid to Palestinians and connect with others concerned and ready to take action to challenge the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
