August 7th Art Talk and Film – Hiroshima 1945-2018, two experiences by three artists: 6:30-9 p.m. in Medford Library Community Room
Renowned Ashland-based artist Betty LaDuke will give a slide-based presentation about her recent trip to Hiroshima and the sketches she made there. Many of those will be displayed in the community room where the event is held. After LaDuke’s presentation, there’ll be a screening of “Hellfire: A Journey from Hiroshima.” This 58-minute documentary, which was Grand Prize Winner in the 1986 San Francisco Film Festival, traces the development of 15 works, now known collectively as the Hiroshima Murals, by Iri and Toshi Maruki, who depicted in them what they had seen at Ground Zero. The program begins at 7 p.m. People are encouraged to come at 6:30 for light refreshments and to view the LaDuke sketches.

August 8th Community Conversation: 5-6:30 at Trinity Episcopal Church

Under the auspices of Peace House, and supported by a grant from Oregon Humanities, these conversations encourage participants to express their recollections, thoughts and feelings about living their entire lives under the threat of nuclear annihilation. They also offer information about the UN-sponsored treaty to abolish nuclear weapons, which was opened for the nations’ signatures on September 20, 2017 and has already been signed by more than 60 nations. The conversation will be facilitated by Dr. Michael Niemann and Dr. Herbert Rothschild, both long-time nuclear disarmament activists. The conversation will last a little more than an hour. Everyone is invited to participate.

August 9th Closing Ceremony: 5 p.m. in Japanese Garden of Lithia Park

Always moving, this brief ceremony encourages reflection on what was lost and what must be saved. It will feature the haunting sound of the traditional Japanese wooden flute, songs by the choir of the Japanese Association of Southern Oregon, a spiritual reflection, and the floating of sunflowers in the pond of the Japanese Garden.

Following the closing ceremony, the Ashland City Band, which will play in the Lithia Park bandshell at 7 p.m., will include two selections especially chosen for the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Observance.
