People around the world are up in arms and devastated as Israel continues its brutal war in Gaza and beyond. The constant flow of images of dead and starving children, bombed out hospitals and homes, slain bodies of aid workers and journalists cannot be ignored.
But does exposing the carnage of Israel’s “kill first” policy make any difference?
In the 180 days Israel has bombarded Gaza, it has killed more than 32,000 people – including more than 14,000 children. Shocking reports, including the targeted killing of seven World Central Kitchen aid workers, hideous conditions for prisoners in Israeli custody, and the morally bankrupt use of starvation as a weapon of war make up only the most recent headlines.
Even the most fiercely aligned supporter of Israel’s war – the United States under Biden – has backed up on its blind loyalty and has indicated its support in its supply of weapons and munitions may be conditional. This is on top of the UN Security Council resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire. At the same time, the International Court of Justice and human rights groups claim to have identified evidence of genocidal acts and war crimes. Now, on this day of solidarity with Palestinians, Iran has vowed to make Israel pay for the killing of two commanders and nine others.
Meanwhile, people of conscience continue to take bold, nonviolent actions to demand that the US stop arming Israel and calling for an immediate and lasting ceasefire. At least 85 members of Congress have also called for a ceasefire, as has President Biden. Protests have targeted public institutions, blocked highways, stopped shipments of munitions at ports, and exposed weapons manufacturers like Lockheed Martin and Elbit Systems.
Similar stories of resistance can be found in Germany, in the UK, Ireland, and in many other European Countries. This is on top of the millions of people who have participated in marches, boycotts, vigils, and bird-dogging of elected officials and AIPAC.
Israel’s war expanded outside of Gaza months ago, and has all but erupted into a regional war with Iran and other neighboring countries. In Israel, support for Netanyahu is at an all time low and demands for his ouster continue to escalate in all-night street protests and a call for special elections by Benny Gantz.
What will it take for this madness to end?
