Amanda Gorman

Amanda Gorman was the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate in 2014. She published The One for Whom Food Is Not Enough, a book of poetry in 2015. She became famous in 2021 when, invited by Jill BIden, she wrote and performed her poem “The Hill We Climb” at the inauguration of President Joe Biden, being the youngest poet in U.S. history to read at a presidential inauguration. She has since published a book of poetry by the same name.

She studied sociology at Harvard College and graduated cum laude in 2020. She is a member of Phi Beta Cappa sorority.

Gorman has been highlighted in Time magazine’s 100 Next list under the category of “Phenoms,” as profiled by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Since her rise to prominence, she has become a recognized voice for human rights and free speech both nationally and internationally, including at the United Nations. Gorman was a speaker at the 2024 Democratic National Convention. She is passionate about supporting young voices.”Robbing children of the chance to find their voices in literature is a violation of their right to free thought and free speech.”

In 2017, Gorman said she intends to run for president in 2036, an aspiration she has often repeated.

Here is her poem The Hill We Climb.
