MLK Day in Ashland once again promises to draw large crowds into downtown Ashland with the traditional 11:30 a.m. celebration at the Historic Armory Building with a procession to the Ashland Plaza where the full “I Have a Dream” speech will be broadcast on loudspeakers.
This year, after 20 years of service, Dr. D.L. Richardson will hand off his role as emcee to Kamilah Long. The theme of this year’s MLK Day is “The Battle is in Our Hands…We Must Keep Going…The End we seek is a society at peace with itself, One that can live with its Conscience.”
Tim Bond, Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s Artistic Director will deliver the keynote address to accompany a new video commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The event will also include live performances by the Dave Story Band, BASE Youth Drummers, BASE Youth Dancers (choreographed by Aisha Wand), Helman Elementary and Ashland School District Middle School Choirs, the Rogue Valley Peace Choir, and spoken word from area students.
Participants are advised to come before the 11:30 starting time to secure a seat. Overflow will be guided to Carpenter Hall in an overflow area where festivities will be televised.
