A note from the author: All of the information in this essay came from A People’s History of the United States, by Howard Zinn, and Lies My Teacher Told Me, by James W. Loewen, both of which uses primary sources such as eyewitness accounts, journal entries, and letters from Christopher Columbus himself.
Also, Columbus Day is technically on October 12th, but the day shifts every year in the US in order to land on a weekday. This year it falls on Monday, the 14th.
It’s also worth noting that early in life, Bartolomé de las Casas advocated the use of African slaves as substitutes for the natives in the Americas.  Eventually, however, he retracted those views and came to see all forms of slavery as being equally wrong.
