Dear friends and neighbors, In the wake of this week’s devastation to the communities of Talent and Phoenix, I find some solace in the abundant ways you all are reaching out to support each other, and the creative and resilient spirit we are already witnessing here. While we do not yet have a calculation of our enormous loss, we do know that the fire has consumed a dozen manufactured home parks, and hundreds of apartments, houses and businesses–along with life as we know it in the Rogue Valley. Thanks to each and all of you for all you are doing to offer comfort and safety to one another in the face of this horrific tragedy. A bit of good news: this morning FEMA approved the State’s request for an Emergency Declaration. This will provide funding for our most immediate needs, including ongoing fire recovery, search and rescue, and shelter. It also opens the door to the next level of FEMA assistance that could provide individual support. More information should be forthcoming in days to come. Please note that because of downed electric lines and water issues, Talent and Phoenix residents are still asked to stay away from their homes and businesses. I know that this is a huge request, but is necessary to allow the city and utility workers to make essential repairs. If you did not lose your home and remain in Talent, please heed the advisory to boil drinking water until further notified. Below you will find some resources and links to information that may be helpful in coming days and weeks. Please continue to take good care of yourselves and each other. How We Can meet the Challenges of Authoritarianism
This is not our first rodeo with authoritarianism. Americans have collectively risen to seemingly impossible challenges in the past, and we can do so again. By Maria J. Stephan Analysis
