The Harmony of Resilience

By Elizabeth V. Hallett

In a stunning collaboration of science and technology, a global and interstellar event occurred from a recently launched US space capsule. Astronaut Sarah Giles, who took her violin into space, played “Rey’s Theme” from StarWars by composer John Lewis. Hair flying inside the SpaceX Polaris Dawn space capsule, Sarah was playing in zero gravity!

Amazingly, she was joined on Earth by musicians, including student orchestras, in an impeccably coordinated performance with Earthlings from several countries including  Haiti, Sweden, Brazil, Uganda, and the United States.

Sarah spoke to the importance of the performance as an homage to “the resilience and potential of children everywhere.” Hats off to her and her amazing cabin mates for experiments they are conducting to benefit science and culture together. You can see other coverage of this amazing event as well on YouTube by typing “violin and space.”

Please consider the hope and potential of using our earthly technologies for harmony, ingenuity and peace rather than the horrific production of weaponry leading to war and genocide between nations.
