Demilitarizing the Federal Budget

The United States spends almost as much on its military as all the other nations of the world combined, many of whom are our long-time allies. This huge annual appropriation encourages periodic war-making simply to justify itself. Additionally, in an era when both Congress and the Executive branch have agreed to budgetary austerity instead of increasing revenues by raising taxes on the very wealthy and corporations, military spending is directly competitive for funding with necessary programs like nutrition, health care, education, infrastructure rebuilding, and environmental protection.

Since 2011, through its Federal Budget Education Program, Peace House has been educating people on the needless damage Washington has been inflicting on the American people. “The Federal Budget: Myths and Realities” has been presented to numerous organizations, on television, and on radio. (To schedule a presentation, call our office at 541-482-9625 or email info@peacehouse.net.) In addition, we have been mobilizing advocacy for life-serving budget priorities, with a special focus on involving the social service leaders in the Valley. A significant component of that work has been to establish strong relationships with our two U.S. Senators, both of whom hold committee positions that influence budget formation.
